Hola mi amigos y bienvenidos!
Yes I'm now here in sunny sunny Mexico. Flew into Mexico City on Monday (all was fine, even though before we took off, we were told we would be delayed because they noticed something strange in the right engine...yeah great thing to say before a 6 hour flight, thanks Mr Captain). Met up with Stefan and stayed there until yesterday. Several words to sum up my experience of Mex City; Big; Giant; Massive; Crammed; Friendly; Brilliant; and of course polluted. Everyones speaking spanish...oh dear.
The first crazy thing you notice is how small everyone is. And also how everyone stares at you. Literally people just stand there and stare (I guess the blonde hair, blue eyes, and tall combination is a bit overwhelming for them). Insane. Also, people are trying to sell you stuff all the time. On the metro, people come on with rucksacks with speakers in and play some crazy music and try to sell you the cds: "sesenta musicos para diez pesos!" (60 tracks for 10 pesos (about 50p)). Oh yeah and everything is very cheap.
We went to Teotihuacán on Wednesday. Its a massive site of the Teotihuacán civilisation, and was Mexico's biggest ancient city. Actually the biggest pyramid there (Pirámide del sol) is the 3rd biggest pyramid in the world. But anyway...
I'm in Choulua in Stefan's house at the mo. It's so nice, and so weird to think that he lives here.. the view from his window is amazing (see pic).
You may or may not know that last week I was in New York City. It was insane. So amazing to finally go to the city everyone talks about. It was crazily cold though...the first few days of my stay there were proper blizzards. It's great to get back into the travelling lifestyle; because at the hostel theres not much to do, you end up going out pretty much all the time (I literally only used the hostel for sleeping). Went to so many great gigs, comedy shows, films (including cool sword dancing and kung fu for chinese new year)...met nice folk at the hostel also. Crazy to think I've travelled through 3 of the worlds biggest megalopolises in just over a week (London, NYC, Mex).
I didn't see any famous people which was a large disapointment. Nevermind ay.
I want to get to a spanish school soon (maybe Xalapa in the East or Oaxaca in the South). But then again I think stefan and some of his friends are planning to head to Veracruz (gulf coast), so I might tag on with them and head to the beach for a while. This is what I love about it all, im as free as some sort of bird! Beach today? Old historic town and salsa dancing tomorrow? Guatemalan rainforest Monday? Kidnapped by bandit drug lords Wednesday? Who knows!?
Oh yeah and I've had two people say im crazy now:
1) In US immigration. The guy was asking the normal questions, where are you going next etc...I told him that I'm travelling down through Central America for 6 months, to which he replied 'Jeez your crazy man...have you run away from home?'
2) The Mexican guy on the plane next to me, after telling him my plans says 'Your a crazy man, I've never even travelled in Mexico, its too dangerous.'
Considering these were at the very start of my trip, I'm sure you'd agree it's a great confidence boost..! Well actually it kind of made me even more excited, and its cool people thinking of you as some sort of intrepid traveller. Indiana Simon, thats what they call me.
Yes well because I've only been to NY (english) and now with Stefan, things havent been too hard yet, but when things do I'll be sure to let y'all know.
Let me know whats going on in your lives (comment below), t'would be coool to hear from you.
Oh yeah also I've been on Mexican radio. It was Stefans radio show and was probably the funnest thing I've done in a darn long time. (also probably the randomist)
Much love to all
Until next time
Simon
